Daytona International Speedway
Daytona International Speedway, This past weekend you made a dream come true. My 12 year old son, Landon, has autism. Ever since he was 4 or 5 years old he has focused on race cars and numbers. My husband and I have enjoyed Nascar but have never been "true" fans, we don't understand all the rules and stuff. Landon however is a walking Nascar trivia cheat book. We used to quiz him with questions like "What's Danica Patrick plus Tony Stewart?" and he would pause for not quite a whole second and spit out "Jeff Gordon". He was barely six!! It wasn't always sunshine and rainbows. Landon was in speech therapy for 5 years, and in ABA therapy for almost 8. My husband spent the better part of our sons first 11 years deployed on submarines for the US Navy. Nascar has been my sons language for most of that time. Landon has come a long way and is very much verbal now but the first ten years were hard. When I say you all have been a lifesaver, I mean it. My husband retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the Navy this past fall. Finding work has been difficult for both of us, even though I recently graduated with a bachelors. Money has been tight. We could have NEVER afforded to attend the Datyona 500 without you donating tickets to Vet tix. When I saw tickets were available I was over the moon excited. I tucked the tickets in a Valentines Day card for Landon and the look on his face when he opened them was priceless. The three of us enjoyed the experience immensely. The roar of the cars was insane, and we couldn't stop grinning. Unfortunately the heat was a bit much for Landon and we left around lap 65. I hope that one day in the future we can make it back for a night race when it isn't so hot. The next time we would like to save up to afford the fan zone tickets too, Landon would love to see the garages and trophy! This morning he started talking about the race the minute he woke up. You made a little boys dream come true, getting to go to the Daytona 500. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. Our entire family is eternally grateful. Attached is a picture of my husband, myself, and our amazing youngest son Landon. Jenny Wauson
